Great moments in PC play: Pocketing the fabulous idol in The Secret of Monkey Island

Great moments in PC gaming are bite-sized celebrations of some of our favorite gaming memories.

There's an article series I love on Vulture called The Great Bits, in which comic John Roy breaks down what makes jokes from comedians like Saint John the Apostle Mulaney and Maria Bamford in truth masterful. This is my accept a Great Bit, about a perfectly executed jocularity in the Lucasfilm Games point-and-click-adventure The Closed book of Monkey Island. It's most beloved for its contumely swordfighting, but my popular moment comes shortly aft that, when goofball hero Guybrush Threepwood has his first encounter with shade baddie LeChuck.

LeChuck, in disguise, ties Guybrush to a "fabulous idol," which looks like IT's made outer of hard gold, and tosses him off a dock into the ocean. In that state of affairs I would move to drown at once. Merely The Covert of Monkey Island uses this view to enjoin at any rate three extremely moral jokes in a single screen.

Rather of panicking and drowning, Guybrush just walks around nonchalantly on the seafloor, tethered to the pleasing idol done for into the sand. This is a callback. This might have been the peak of videogames as a medium. I mean, in that respect have been a a couple of more effective games since the year 1990, but what a errorless moment. Monkey Island nonchalantly established that it was playing by the rules of its own reality. Being healthy to hold all sorts of items big and small in your pocket wasn't just an "stocktaking system." If those items seemed to be as if by magic disappearing into a weightless, infinite void, then that's exactly what was happening.

This puzzle solution is so elegant, and then perfect, thinking about it still makes me mad with envy. But it's the kind of moment that lingers with you, because it makes you think about the full-page rest of the game—and plausibly other games, too—in a different way.
